I-CANyons Parent Toolkit for Kindergarten Mathematics
Operations and Algebraic Thinking: I CAN...
Standard
Understand addition with objects, drawings, and equations.
|
Core Standard
K.OA 1 Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental
images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal
explanations, expressions, or equations.
K.OA 3 Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5=2+3 and 5 =4+1). |
In Other Words
The child represents addition with objects (i.e., math manipulatives) first and then written expressions. For example: 3+2=5.
|
If Mastered
IK.OA.1 If your child has mastered addition and subtraction with real objects (manipulatives) them support them with drawing pictures and equations (3+4=7).

If Not Yet Mastered
For students who have not yet mastered K.OA.1, provide them with
opportunities to practice one-to-one correspondence (touching an object
and saying the number). Repeat this process as students add to or take
away from the original amount. They need practice counting the original
number of objects, the number they are adding on or taking away from,
and the total amount. Be sure that the student is counting on and not
recounting the original number.

Standard
Solve addition and subtraction word problems using objects and drawings.
|
Core Standard
K.OA 2 Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
|
In Other Words
The child solves addition and subtraction problems within 10 by using objects, drawings, or written expressions.
|
If Mastered
If your child has mastered addition problems within 10... see above and support with subtraction problems within 10 using objects, drawings, or written expressions.
|
If Not Yet Mastered
K.OA.2 Picture Mats and Addition Cards: Parent models how to use the picture mats, reading the stories on the cards and inserting numbers into the blanks. Story Mat.
-Child acts out the stories on the mats, drawing, then counting to solve the problem -Child then fills in either pictures or numbers to create an addition or subtraction number sentence. Click Here * Dot Card Addition * Domino Addition *My Ten Frame Riddle |
Standard
Combine two numbers to make 10.
|
Core StandardK.OA.4 For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation.
|
In Other Words
Using objects or drawings, find combinations of numbers that make 10. If the students is given a number such as 3 he/she needs to understand that if you have 7 more you have a total of 10.
