I-CANyons Parent Toolkit for Fifth Grade Language Arts (ELA)
Speaking and Listening: I CAN...
Standard
Engage effectively in conversations by coming prepared, following discussions rules, building upon other's ideas, drawing conclusions, and summarizing key ideas (partners and groups)
|
Core Standard
SL 5.1 Engage e!ectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
|
In Other Words
Students talk about different topics and texts (on a fifth grade level) with different size groups: one-on-one, in groups of three to six others, and with the whole class. Students can share their own ideas, which should make sense to others. Students can also build on ideas that others have shared.
|
If Mastered
If mastered, continue to engage your student in conversations about daily tasks and current events around the dinner table, in the car, etc. Opportunities to speak about diverse topics will enrich your child's background knowledge and ability to communicate.
|
If Not Yet Mastered
Practice having discussions as a family. You could talk about a current event, a book you're all reading, or an educational show that you've watched. You can discuss it and have your child practice sharing his/her ideas in a comfortable environment. This is a great time to help him/her develop confidence and clarity in sharing ideas.
