The student can use their understanding of roots, prefixes, suffixes, as well as syllable patterns to read familiar, and unfamiliar words in context (a sentence where the word makes sense) and out of context (a word standing alone, in a list, etc.).

This link has several activities/games that will help students develop grade level phonics and word analysis skills. Ask your child's teacher if there are specific areas to focus on. (ie. prefixes, suffixes, root words, etc.).

If MasteredIf mastered, have your child extend their skills in expression by learning from masters of the dramatics--actors! Watch, with your child, any of the literature stories found online here. Talk about the ways in which the readers use expression to add emotion and interest to the stories. Have your child use the characteristics modeled in their own reading.
