Core Standard

SL.4.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacherled) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
a. Come to discussions prepared, having read or studied required material; explicitly draw on that preparation and other information known about the topic to explore ideas under discussion.
b. Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions and carry out assigned roles.
c. Pose and respond to specific questions to clarify or follow up on information, and make comments that contribute to the discussion and link to the remarks of others.
d. Review the key ideas expressed and explain their own ideas and understanding in light of the discussion.

In Other Words

Students talk about different topics and texts (on a fourth grade level) with different size groups: one-on-one, small groups, and with the whole class. Students are prepared to share ideas from reading, review key ideas, help answer questions, and build on the ideas of others.

If Mastered

Encourage your student to continue to develop confidence and clarity in discussing ideas from their reading. Have discussions as a family. You could talk about a current event, a book your child is reading, or an educational show that you've watched. You can discuss it and have your child practice sharing his/her ideas, asking and answering questions as well as listening.

If Not Yet Mastered

Ask them to tell you about their favorite book. Ask questions to help them describe what happened. Practice having discussions as a family. You could talk about a current event, a book your child is reading, or an educational show that you've watched. You can discuss it and have your child practice sharing his/her ideas in a comfortable environment. This is a great time to help them develop confidence and clarity in sharing ideas.
