In Other Words
The student can use understanding of roots, prefixes, suffixes, as well as syllable patterns to read familiar, and unfamiliar words in context (a sentence where the word makes sense) and out of context (a word standing alone, in a list, etc.).

If MasteredUse the following rubric to help your student attend to not only how fast they read, but the expression they give to the text and voice they use to bring the story to life.

If Not Yet MasteredStudent needs to read grade level texts aloud to a parent or sibling. Time your child for 1 minute and count the number of correctly read words per minute. Reread the same passage at least 3 times to build fluency. Have students track how many words they are reading so they can see the progress they are making. Fluency passages can be found here. Parent can read a paragraph modeling correct expression and phrasing and then the child rereads the same paragraph following the parent's model.
