Solve one and two-step word problems within 100 using addition and subtraction.
OA 2.1 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one-and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Students will be able to solve story problems that require addition, subtraction, or a combination of both. These problems will require students to solve for unknown information (represented by a symbol such as an empty square or letter) in each position. 48 + x = 62, x + 48 = 62, 14 + 62 = x.
Use paper and pencil to draw out story problems. Move the unknown box into different positions for example: David had some stickers. He gave 37 to Susan. Now he has 26 stickers. How many stickers did David have before? __ - 37 = 26. Another example : David had $37. His grandpa gave him some money for his birthday. Now he has $63. How much money did David’s grandpa give him? $37 + ___ = $63 2nd grade word problems: http://math.about.com/od/wordproblem1/ss/gr2wp.htm

The student should use objects such as blocks to work out word problems before they work with numbers. For example: David had 63 stickers. He gave 37 to Susan. How many stickers does David have now? 63 – 37 =___. After using objects, the students should try drawing out story problems. Mentally add within 20.
OA 2.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
Second grade students will develop strategies that enable them to fluently (without hesitation) add all numbers combinations up to a sum of 20.
Children who have already memorized the addition facts can benefit from opportunities to solve addition problems with multiples of tens or hundreds, such as 90+90, or 400+300. Children who have higher order thinking skills should be encouraged to solve real world addition problems related to their environment.
Some children may need continued practice solving easier addition facts such as those with answers no greater than 12. Working with easier facts will help children apply strategies to problems with larger answers. Useful strategies: Counting on: 8 + 4 = ? (start with 8 then count on ...9, 10,11,12) Doubles: There are 10 doubles facts from 0+0 to 9+9. They are easy to learn and a powerful way to learn near doubles. Near Doubles: Sometimes called Doubles-plus-one include all combinations where one addend is more than another. i.e., 3+4 is the same as 3+3+1 more. Math Fact fluency

Have your child explain the strategies they are using as they subtract. Even if they say the just "know" it, a child should be able to describe at least one strategy to justify their answer. Another learning task would be to have your child write complete fact families. The following is a complete fact family: 2+3=5, 3+2=5, 5-3=2, 5-2=3. . Practice these strategies:1) Counting back: 12 - 4 = □ (12…11, 10, 9, 8) 2) Doubles plus/minus one: 6 + 7 = □ (6 + 6 + 1 or 7 + 7 - 1) 3) Practice making fact families for example: 3+2= 5, 2+3=5, 5-3=2, 5-2=3 Website for making combinations
