Read on-level text fluently with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression

Core Standard

RF 2.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. Read with a purpose and understanding, with appropriate rate and expression, and self corrects or rereads if necessary.
RI 2.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend informational texts, including history/social studies, science and technical texts in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range
RL 2.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry, in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range

Students will be able to read grade-level text by correctly pronouncing the words, reading similar to the speed they speak, and paying attention to periods, commas, and other punctuation while reading with expression. Benchmark for 2nd grade students: Fall: 55 words correct per minute (wcpm); Winter: 80 wcpm; Spring: 92 wcpm

If Mastered

Students read aloud focusing specifically on correctly pronouncing the words, their speed, and their expression. To focus specifically on expression use activity F.026. To focus specifically on speed use activity F.025 or F.029. Click here to download an activity from FCRR.

If Not Yet Mastered

Parent reads a text aloud modeling fluent reading. Student then reads text aloud to parent with appropriate speed, accuracy and expression. Use activity F.025 to track reading ability and improvement in words correct per minute. Use activity F.026 to work on expression and voice while reading.
